The Museums of the Pla: perfect to go with a meal in DaiCa, your restaurant in Mallorca
The Pla of Mallorca is not a very well known area in spite of its many undiscovered attractions, among them its museums. They are generally small and modest but, in any case, very interesting and varied; they are, without a doubt, well worth a visit. Above all if you decide to eat in one of the restaurants in this area of Mallorca, for example, DaiCa Restaurant and Petit Hotel and you want a cultural experience at the same time. Are you up for it? We are going to show you what will interest you most.
Natural Science Museum in Costitx
In 2, Rafael Horrach Street in Costitx you will have a good time visiting a small but very interesting Natural Science Museum. You will be able to see a wide variety of animals in the various departments, which feature studies of fish, reptiles and amphibians, birds, entomology, mycology, geology and paleontology. The exhibits are in glass cases together with information about each one which makes the visit interesting even for those who are not conversant with this particular subject.
The Museum is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second and fourth weekend of each month.
The Beekeeping Museum in LLubi, very close to the DaiCa Restaurant in Mallorca
Llubi, location of the DaiCa Restaurant and the Petit Hotel, is well known for its beekeeping tradition. Not only because of its famous Honey Festival but also because of this museum. It comprises a private collection of beekeeping accoutrements, made up of 150 objects and carefully amassed over a period of thirty years by the owner, Bernat Lliteras. From this collection we can appreciate the development of beekeeping through tools, methods and materials.
The museum has the added attraction of being situated in a flour mill right in the centre of Llubi. A good way to enhance a visit to this interesting museum is with a meal in DaiCa, your restaurant in Mallorca: they are right next to each other!
Fray Junipero Serra Museum in Petra
The central theme of this museum is the Franciscan monk Fray Junipero Serra, one of Petra’s illustrious forefathers. This monk is famous for having founded nine missions in North America: small areas of population which were among the first established by a European in California and which over time developed into emblematic cities such as San Diego and Los Angeles.
In actual fact, Fray Junipero Serra is the only Spaniard featured in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the US Capitol in Washington D. C. This city is, moreover, where he was canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis which made him the second saint from Mallorca after Saint Catalina Tomas.
The museum opened in 1959 and takes the visitor through the life and achievements of the saint in addition to a fantastic collection of related objects such as paintings, engravings, images, photos, sculptures and much more. The museum is not the same as the house where Junipero Serra was born which can also be visited (and through which you can see just how the poorer people in Mallorca lived in the 18th century).
The museum is open from Monday to Friday and the last Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Museum of Ethnology in Muro
Would you like to see the authentic rural Mallorca? The Museum of Ethnology in Muro provides you with total immersion in our traditions. Located in a house dating from the 17th century, there you can see objects usually seen in a traditional Mallorcan home at the beginning of the 20th century: Mallorcan clothes, furniture, work-related instruments, tools and much more.
You can visit this museum from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; it is also open on Thursday afternoon from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Museum of Ethnology in Muro is also open at the weekend, on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
